Gender Roles and Social Norms
Gender Roles
Men are the main providers of the household, while the women take care of the kids and the house. the status of women has improved from the 1970's where most women did not have a job and if they did they were primarily part-time. There is a written constitutional article that state that the genders are equal but have not been enforced in some fields. Switzerland is a patriarchal society where women have to submit to their fathers and later their husbands. Women generally do not have a post secondary form of education, and women hold less important roles in their fields. Women also earn less money per year than men. Women do not have a large political role and barely got the right to vote. fortunately men and women are being treated more equally.
Social Norms
In one of the wealthiest countries in the world, the richest 20 percent of the population owns 80 percent of total private assets. Yet the class structure is not particularly visible. The middle class is large and for its members, upward or downward social mobility is rather easy. The cultural norm is for wealth to remain discreet. Too manifest a demonstration of wealth is negatively valued, but poverty is perceived as shameful, and many people hide their economic situation.
